What is Star Internet
Star Internet is a satellite internet service run by SpaceX.
It uses a constellation of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites to beam internet to user terminals (a dish + modem/router) on the ground.
Because the satellites are low, latency is much better than traditional geostationary satellite internet.
Star Internet works by using satellite technology to deliver high-speed internet from space directly to a dish (antenna) at your home, vehicle, or business. Unlike traditional internet that uses underground cables or cell towers, Star Internet beams internet from a network of satellites orbiting the Earth.

SpaceX Satellites in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO)
Star Internet uses thousands of small satellites orbiting Earth at about 550 km altitude — much lower than traditional satellites (36,000 km).
These are LEO satellites, which give faster speeds and lower latency (less delay) than older satellite internet systems.
As of 2025, Star Internet has over 6,000+ active satellites in orbit, constantly growing.

Internet Signal Comes From Earth
Star Internet connects to the ground internet infrastructure via “ground stations” located around the world.
These stations are connected to the global fiber-optic internet backbone.
The signal goes:
From a data center or the internet
To a Star Internet ground station
Then to a satellite in space
Which beams it down to your Star Internet dish
Your Star Internet Dish Receives the Signal
You install a Star Internet dish at your home or vehicle (called “Dishy McFlatface” by SpaceX).
The dish:
Automatically aligns itself to track satellites overhead.
Connects to a router/modem that gives you Wi-Fi or Ethernet internet.
Two-Way Communication: Uplink + Downlink
The dish and the satellite have a two-way connection:
Download: Data comes down from satellite to your dish.
Upload: Your data (e.g., sending emails, uploading files) goes back to the satellite → ground station → internet.
Satellites hand off your connection between each other as they move across the sky.
Laser Links Between Satellites (New Feature)
Newer Star Internet satellites use space lasers to talk to each other.
This means:
Data can be passed satellite-to-satellite without touching the ground until needed.
Lower latency, faster global routing, and better service in remote areas with no ground stations nearby (e.g., oceans, deserts).
System Adjusts Dynamically
Your dish tracks satellites automatically and switches between them as they move.
The system uses AI and algorithms to choose the best satellite for the fastest and most stable connection.

Requirements for Star Internet to Work
Clear view of the sky (few trees/buildings blocking).

High Speed Internet
Star Internet works by using satellites in space to beam high-speed internet down to a dish on your house or vehicle. These satellites talk to each other with lasers, and to ground stations on Earth that connect to the global internet. Your dish automatically tracks the satellites to give you internet anywhere — even in the middle of nowhere.
